In this monograph, as a basic methodological aspect, a change in speech processing methods from computational to cognitive, i.e. those that not only statistically process data based on analysis and evaluation of the most important phonetic convergence factors, but also explain the complex relationships between them, has been acknowledged. This monograph approaches phonetic convergence as a notion related to the Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) which regards human conversation as a dynamic adaptive message exchange depending on psycholinguistic interactions between speakers. Phonetic convergence in conversation involves alignment of segmental and suprasegmental features of speech to those of the interlocutor, with the function of cooperative or manipulative signalling of social common ground.
